National Honor Society Advisor: Matthew Rozell What is National Honor Society? National Honor Society is an organization that was founded in 1921 by the National Association of High School Principals to help create a better-rounded student who would be willing to put his or her talents to work serving others in society. Leadership and character development are the hallmarks of the institution, and through active service to others these skills are sharpened and put to use for the betterment of the community and the nation. The Sandy Hill Chapter of National Honor Society was chartered in 1957. How does one qualify for National Honor Society Membership? A candidate for membership in the Sandy Hill Chapter of National Honor Society is a junior or senior who has maintained an 87.00 cumulative grade point average for his/her first two or three years at the high school. Qualified students are notified and invited to become official candidates in October, and the NHS Faculty Council solicits teacher comments in the areas of character, leadership, academic integrity and scholarship, as well as service. Potential members also submit a candidate form to help the NHS Faculty Council in reviewing the student’s candidacy. Candidates selected for membership are notified in October. Five Faculty Council members reach the decision, and then make recommendations to the principal, who appoints selected candidates to membership in National Honor Society. The National Honor Society induction ceremony takes place the first Sunday in November. For the past few years, it has been held in conjunction with the school district’s Wall of Distinction ceremony, which honors past graduates of Hudson Falls who have gone on to become leaders in the community as well. What are the expectations for National Honor Society members? National Honor Society members are expected to be enthused about scholarship, be willing to take on leadership roles in the school and community, approach problems and obstacles with a strong sense of morals, values and character, as well as have a desire to render service. Members’ progress and growth in these areas are tracked. We meet twice a month.
